Fluting

Fluting is the textured or clamshell shape on the underside of some decking products. Deck boards with fluting have less material in each deck board than solid boards. The process of fluting cuts down on the materials weight reducing shipping costs and making them easier to work with on the job site. This is the preferred style of board for many builders looking to quickly construct a cheap deck. The downside to fluted deck boards in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio is that they are usually uncapped and can absorb moisture from rain and snow. The leading fluted deck board brands have been known to show signs of moisture such as rot and mildew in as little as 6 months. Carefully consider your options before purchasing or hiring a subcontractor that uses a fluted deck board.
