KDAT - Kiln Dried After Treatment
KDAT is an acronym that stands for Kiln Dried After Treatment. This process involves putting lumber into giant kilns to remove excess moisture before it reaches the job site. Green Shield offers KDAT deck framing in two colors. Our brown KDAT deck frames provide a classic dark wood look without the risk of your deck turning green. When a customer chooses Gray KDAT deck framing, they can make a bold visual statement and extend the color palette of their home's interior to the outdoors.

Why Choose KDAT Over Other Products?

KDAT deck framing is much more stable than other framing materials. When building a composite deck a good foundation is essential to provide a level surface and prevent decks from becoming wavy. Traditional "wet" lumber will shrink over time and cause issues. Green Shield builds with KDAT deck framing materials that are "pre-shrunk" and pre-stained, making sure every Green Shield deck is built to last.
How Does Green Shield Keep Their KDAT Framing Affordable?
In the last few years, the price for lumber, composite, and screws has fluctuated wildly. Most contractors don’t know how to account for these price changes and will return to the homeowner with additional fees for “time and materials” after the project begins, sometimes even before it is completed! This means that the prices most builders give upfront may not be the actual final price you will have to pay.
Green Shield has instead chosen to go with a fixed price model. This means that the number quoted during your deck design process is the amount you will pay. No hidden fees. No surprise changes. As Michigan’s #1 deck builder, Green Shield has been able to scale operations including building our own distribution centers. Owning our own distribution center allows Green Shield to negotiate directly with the manufacturers of our decking materials, locking in better products and prices for our homeowners.
How Do I Know the Best Framing Materials Have Been Selected?
Your deck boards are sorted three times! The first sort takes place at our manufacturer. Each board is inspected for quality before it is shipped to us. After it arrives at Green Shield’s distribution center our team looks through the lumber again to make sure only the best pieces make it to your job site. Finally our craftsmen have the final say in which pieces of KDAT are used on your deck project.

Our decks come with a lifetime warranty. If anything goes wrong in the future our service teams will work with you to make it right. Making sure only the best decking materials are used is critically important to us. Using the best materials allows us to offer this lifetime warranty on every Green Shield deck. Anything that doesn’t last under normal conditions will be replaced by Green Shield, to make sure your deck is the best it can be.
Can I See the Green Shield KDAT Difference?
Yes! There are many ways to see Green Shield’s KDAT and all our other deck materials. Our decks (over 3,500 of them) are located throughout Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio. If you live near Rockford Michigan, our recommendation is to relax and enjoy a meal on the deck Green Shield built for Bostwick Lake Inn. Our crews also built the deck for Rose’s Restaurant in East Grand Rapids. Don’t live near Rockford or East Grand Rapids? Our team regularly hosts events throughout our service area and is always ready to help you design a deck at your home.
