VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds)

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are a group of chemicals that often appear in construction materials, preservation treatments, and solvents. Common VOCs include acetone, benzene, formaldehyde, methylene chloride, perchloroethylene, trichloroethylene, toluene, and xylene.

VOCs are common in the decking industry. Standard composite boards are manufactured in such a way that they can continue to release VOCs through a process called “off-gassing”. Choosing to build with traditional wood products requires continued staining which releases new VOCs year after year. Volatile Organic Compound chemicals can cause irritation and health risks both upon application and for years after they leach into the ground. Be sure to ask your deck builder about your risk for exposure to VOCs both at installation and over the next few decades.

The Green Shield Difference

Green Shield has selected deck boards that are VOC free and are not created with formaldehyde, this prevents any risk of “off-gassing” from your deck boards. Because with a Green Shield deck you never stain your deck again, you won’t need to expose yourself to VOCs to keep your deck looking beautiful

"There are no Volatile Organic Compounds in our deck boards. Our never stain your deck again promise reduces your exposure to VOCs from stain and sealants for years to come."
