Green Shield only uses #1 builders grade southern yellow pine in your deck frame. The SYP used in a Green Shield deck frame is Kiln Dried After Treatment (KDAT) to provide preservation benefits and eliminate the risks of “wet” wood. Our Southern Yellow Pine was carefully selected and sourced from the lumber mill in Wisconsin for aesthetic appeal and quality. While many builders begin with 4x4 posts to build up, we use 6x6 posts for greater stability, durability, and a more robust look. In addition, we wrap a rot blocker around the bottom of our 6x6s to add an additional layer of protection against moisture, bugs, and other factors that contribute to rot. (Refer to " deck posts" below for more detail.)
Southern Yellow Pine (SYP)
Southern Yellow Pine (SYP) is a group of pine tree species known for their balance of quick growth, strength, and preservation treatment absorption. SYP is used across the United States in construction. In deck building SYP provides a readily available lumber product that keeps down costs. Not all SYP is the same, it comes in a number of different builder grades depending on aesthetic appearance.
