Composite Material

Strictly speaking, composite materials are any new material made up of two or more components. In the decking industry composite is also often used to refer to any non-wood decking material, even if they are only made from a single component. There is a wide range of composite decking materials available on the market. The most common composite materials include a mixture of plastic with another filler material. Other deck boards are a full plastic or mineral composite.

Popular decking composites on the market today often include a wood filler. Wood filler makes the composite boards cheaper, but also suffers from many of the faults found in traditional lumber decks. When your deck boards are made with a wood filler product, your risk for rot, decay, and mildew increase as moisture can seep in. Most decking products don’t cover these moisture-related faults in their warranties because they know it is a common point of failure in wood filler composite deck boards.

The Green Shield Difference

Green Shield composite deck boards are made with rice hull composite. By choosing to build with rice hull composites that are wood free our deck boards have superior moisture resistance. Rice hulls have natural properties designed to resist moisture in rice paddies. Those same natural properties have been leveraged to help us protect Green Shield decks in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana.

For those looking for a filler free product, Green Shield also offers a full PVC decking solution. Ask your Deck Designer about the expanded color palette and next level anti-slip surfaces of our PVC deck boards.

"Building with wood-free composite allows us to offer a lifetime warranty. Rice hull is naturally resistant to moisture and reliable for the decades to come."
