Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA)

Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) was a wood treatment used before 2003. In 2004 the EPA phased out residential use of CCA because of the risks for arsenic leaching into the surrounding environment. Made from chromium, copper, and arsenic, CCA popularized the “Womanized” wood industry. Many in the construction industry view this as one of the best wood preservatives and is the reason why many decks built before 2003 have lasted longer than decks built more recently.

The Green Shield Difference

During our deck checks Green Shield has noticed a significant deterioration in structural framing over the last few years. While old CCA lumber could survive direct ground contact for 50 years or more, newer preservation treatments are only lasting 10 years. NADRA estimates that more than half or around 30 million decks in North America are in need of repair or replacement. This number will only continue to grow as CCA is phased out of older structures.

When you choose to build with Green Shield you won’t have to worry about the safety of your deck. To keep your deck standing for a lifetime, Green Shield uses MCA treated KDAT wood and protects your posts with RotBloc protection.
